I will not be the Russia anymore
Jibendu Narayan Mazumder
Crows nest in a wide array of places starting from well obscured crevices of trees to overhanging edges of modern day houses. It is strange how they build their nests at the same place year after year; as if information about these premium spots gets passed from one generation to another. It is this time of the year when these birds, that abound the city landscape, would build their nests to start a family. They would bring in broken twigs and iron wires from all over to build the structure of the nest but the inside would generally be filled with soft straw or wool-like material to protect the new-borns. On several occasions I was protective of my space and destroyed the nests to keep my flat clean. This continued as I was getting on in years – they would build and I would destroy every time.
This year started with one of the biggest crises for mankind – the Russia-Ukraine war. The brief summary, for me, was how the powerful could maul the weak and consider that absolutely legitimate. Why do the powerful always dictate the way the weak should live? Why do they think they can control the lives of the weak? This was something that kept bothering me for a while. In due time spring arrived and these beautiful birds got back to their building act. The same story was getting enacted again. But, this time around, I decided not to be the RUSSIA I used to be all these years. They built their nests, laid eggs and incubated them to keep the ones inside warm – and all of these without any interference. I am so happy to see one of the first hatchlings today morning – full of life and raring to go and meet the world.
